The first Work Meeting of BMMO network took place in Leipzig, Germany, at the Helmholtz Institute, on August 17, 18 and 19, 2018.
BMMO (Beneficial Microorganisms of Marine Organisms) is one of the networks selected by INCOBRA to receive funding to conduct bilateral research, promoting EU-BR cooperation.
It is a research network coordinated by Raquel Peixoto (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) and Michael Sweet (University of Derby). Its main objectives are to summarize different beneficial and pathogenic roles of the microbiomes associated with marine organisms, propose new terms and approaches to understand and potentially improve their resilience, and study how the use of probiotics could aid efforts in this regard.
BMMO is composed by a number of relevant institutions. Represented at the meeting were members from University of Lisbon, University of Aveiro, AquaRio, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, UFRJ and UDerby.
INCOBRA partner SPI was also present at the meeting. Ana Carolina Gomes conducted a training on proposal writing for Horizon 2020 applications.
The meeting was especially important to refine the network’s objectives and future activities, and to initiate the preparation of a very relevant research H2020 proposal, that will be submitted next year.
BMMO’s second work meeting will take place in October 2018 at AquaRio, in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.
